Centerspan picks up Scour
Posted by netwebly | 12.13.2000

Centerspan technologies has won the bidding to acquire the assets of bankrupt Scour.com, including the Scour Exchange multimedia file sharing system. The company agreed to pay $9 million for what's left of the Los Angeles based scour, edging out Liquid Audio and Listen.com.

Centerspan says it hopes to develop a secure system to deliver music, video, ebooks, pictures and "commentary" while quote protecting copyrights using digital rights management technologies - a goal being pursued by a long list of Napsters come lately. The company says the service will debut early next year.

Many observers are questioning in the feasibility of such a service, given widespread resistance to the sort of microfocused monitoring necessary to make a secure file sharing system work.

It is also unclear how Centerspan hopes to compete with established players like Napster and free alternatives like Gnutella in the already congested P2P industry.

The company does have some experience in this area, however. Centerspan is the name behind Socket!, an ambitious although still unproven application which allows users to chat and hook up to play online games.
