Affiliate programs can be a good example of the kind creative thinking that's come to typify E-Commerce.

Simply put, affiliate programs allow web sites to make money by linking to other sites. Whenever a visitor follows a link to an affiliated site, the hit is logged and the originating site receives a small payment for the referral. Checks are mailed on a quarterly basis, usually only once account balances have reached a specified dollar amount.

Clicktrade operates a series of programs enabling even the smallest web sites to create and administer their own affiliate programs.

Site operators select the type of program they want, chose how much they want to reward participating sites for referrals (Typically at least 7 cents per visitor) and set up links. ClickTrade tracks site traffic and revenues and mails checks to affiliates.

When used effectively, affiliate programs can be a creative way of increasing site traffic and generating revenue. Using the example of a program with a 7 cent payment per visitor, the math works out to about $100 for seven hundred visitors for the typical program.

That's pretty good bang for your buck. Affiliate programs also raise interesting possibilities for web sites with traditionally limited revenue streams, such as corporate sites and intranets, which can easily set up programs to direct employees to good deals online and set up a cash trickle that can help the bottom line.
